About
Cork
community bikes is developing a do-it-yourself bike workshop for the
community to use. Our work aims to salvage unwanted bicycles from
the waste stream, repair them and resell them. We work with local
schools and youth groups promoting the use of bicycles and sustainable
transport . We want the workshop to be a centre of training and a
social focus for anybody with an interest in bicycles in the cork
city.`
Objectives
To
develop a workshop based on the recycling of used bicycles
To
make the workshop available for the community to use
To
establish partnerships with local community groups and initiatives
such as youth clubs, schools and environmental groups
To
establish youth training initiatives
To
establish a supply of high quality second hand bikes to the general
public and community groups
To
create environmental benefits through materials recycling, reduction
of landfill and the promotion of cycling as a means of sustainable
transport
To
support the city’s recycling and waste management objectives
by reducing the number of bicycles discarded at landfill sites
To
contribute to the sustainable development of cork city
Benefits
of bicycle recycling
The
bicycle-recycling project provides a range of training and learning
opportunities, working with local youth clubs and schools. The objective
would be to make the workshop a centre for training and education
for anyone with an interest in bicycles. For more information on what
we can offer your school or youth group see the projects pages page.
Re-cycling
The
most obvious benefit of this project is increased level of re-cycling
in Cork city. The bicycle-recycling project will contribute to an
increase in re-cycling by reducing the number of bicycles going to
landfill and increasing the number of bicycles that are re-cycled.
The initiative will also provide an opportunity to proactively promote
and publicise waste minimization, recycling and sustainability issues
tying in with local and national waste minimisation campaigns.
Sustainable
Transport
Nationally
and locally there is a clear need to encourage and provide for a more
sustainable means of transport. One opportunity is through increased
levels of cycling. This initiative will play a major part in contributing
to increased levels of cycling. Higher levels of car use in the city
lead to serious environmental, health and quality of life effects,
through pollution, congestion and road traffic accidents. Cycling
as a mode of transport in urban areas is more sustainable, cheaper
and frequently quicker.
